Updating his 3rd edition (ALA, 1997), Sannwald has added some new features: needs assessment for evaluating current space; "green" design; alternatives to new construction; remote storage; technology advancements; and moving libraries. The checklist format walks users through more than 1,500 questions from site selection to dedication ceremonies, providing supporting data for presentations to governing authorities and stakeholders. (p. 1) Eight research issues concerning use, markup, and information retrieval were explored with a goal of developing generalized policies and practices for providing access to primary documents.
