I zip the dress she just put on; she holds the necklace by its ends and stands, as silent as a fawn, to lift the thicket of her hair— assured I’ll catch the thing that lightly dangles there, the hasp whose chain extends to meet the clip my fingers bring until the circle’s neatly closed upon her skin’s fine down— then turns upon her heels to hear (knowing no question need be posed) my compliments adorn each ear, my words complete the gown.
