Spanish Decree on the Protection of Castles (1949)

The government of Francisco Franco kept intact the heritage laws and preservation policy it inherited from the Republican government. The most significant new preservation legislation promulgated under Franco's government was the Decree on the Protection of Castles, approved and published in 1949. The short decree covered a typologically diverse category of buildings (for example, castles, precincts, fortified churches) of great historic and architectural value that had previously remained unprotected.
