Howe, Greece, and Byron's Helmet

"[A] helmet and a sword, and a crown of laurel," these were the objects placed on Byron's coffin in Missolonghi in April 1824. Three years later on Poros, Dr. Samuel Howe bought one of Byron's helmets, and Col. Jonathan Miller, also an American Philhellene, one of his swords. Both carried their prizes to America, and the sword is still in Vermont. As for the helmet, Dr. Howe kept it in his house in South Boston; it finally passed in 1926 to his daughter Maud Howe Elliott, who returned it to Greece. Is this the helmet that was placed on Byron's coffin? Proof of the connection is lacking, but the sword was once owned by Loukas Chalandritsanos, Byron's last page, as a gift from the master, and the helmet may have had the same history.
