  • In Memoriam:Eduardo Saccone
  • Pier Masimo Forni

The year we just left behind us was saddened by the death of our friend and former Johns Hopkins colleague Eduardo Saccone. Eduardo died in Cork, Ireland on December 2, 2008. Born in Aversa, Italy on November 4, 1938, he received his laurea in Italian literature from the prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. Virtually all of his academic career took place at Johns Hopkins. Appointed as an Assistant Professor in 1966 in the Department of Romance Languages and literatures, he became a member of the Editorial Board of Modern Language Notes. In 1969 came the promotion to Associate Professor followed by that to full Professor in 1974. He continued to teach in Baltimore and edit MLN until the mid 1990s when he accepted to chair the Italian Department at the University of Cork. An internationally recognized authority on the Italian Renaissance and on the twentieth-century Italian novel, he is best known and admired for his work on Ariosto, Castiglione, Svevo and Tozzi. A full obituary will appear in the 2010 issue of this journal. [End Page vi]
