From the Editor

Once again, here we present seven studies on a wide range of topics covering issues from northern Mexico to southern Chile, and a series of film and book reviews drawing attention to quite distinctive modes of presentation. And two Forum pieces: memories of a departed colleague, and a suggestion as to a new way of examining the spatial genealogy hidden behind urban walls.

Perhaps it won’t be long before we have to add a new review section concerned with the ever-increasing number of Internet web-sites, locations of text, images and video clips that bring geography to life as few other media can? But the good news is that JLAG is receiving a steady stream of submissions on a widening range of topics—from historical to GIS, and urban to methodological. And it is important to note that we are also attracting an ever-increasing number of Latin American submissions as the word spreads that ours is a journal that publishes in all of the four principal languages of the Americas.

I thank the many authors of this issue for their patience and understanding in accepting the comments and criticisms (sometimes strong!) of the external reviewers, never an easy task, and to the external reviewers that I list below, my gratitude for giving of their precious time when we all have so many other things to do. Without their assistance JLAG simply could not function: we owe them a great deal.

Una vez más, presentamos aquí siete estudios sobre temas muy distintos y que incluyen áreas desde la frontera norteña mexicana al extremo sur de Chile, más una serie de reseñas de libros y películas que reflejan los diferentes modos de presentación. Y, además, dos piezas en el Forum: una ofrece las memorias de un colega de apellido bien conocido; la otra sugiere formas de examinar la genealogía espacial escondida detrás de las murallas urbanas.

¿Quizá dentro poco tendremos que agregar una nueva sección en la cual pudiéramos tomar en cuenta el creciente número de páginas del Web—lugares donde la combinación de textos, imágenes y clips de video hacen de la geografía latinoamericana más viva que cualquier otro medio? Las mejores noticias son que JLAG recibe un flujo constante de contribuciones que ocupa de una multiplicidad de temas—desde geografía histórica a la SIGA, y de asuntos urbanos a metodología. Y también es importante resaltar que nosotros hemos atraído un número creciente de aportes latinoamericanos, como el mensaje que se difusa a lo largo y ancho del continente, así es nuestra revista publicada en los cuatro principales idiomas de las Américas.

Tengo que agradecer a los muchos autores de esta edición por su paciencia y entendimiento en aceptar los comentarios y criticas (de vez en cuando fuertes!) de los evaluadores externos, un paso nunca fácil, y a los evaluadores que figuran en la lista abajo, mi gratitud por haber dado parte de su tiempo tan valioso, cuando todos tenemos muchas otras cosas para hacer. Sin su valioso apoyo simplemente JLAG no podría funcionar: les debemos mucho.
