David Eltis is Robert W. Woodruff Professor of History at Emory University. He is the author of The Rise of African Slavery in the Americas (2000), awarded the Frederick Douglass Prize. He is also cocreator of The Transatlantic Slave Trade: A Database on CD-ROM (1999).
Paul Finkelman is President William McKinley Distinguished Profesor of Law and Public Policy and Senior Fellow, Government Law Center at Albany Law School, and the author of more than a hundred scholarly articles and more than twenty books.
Karen Fisher Younger is managing director of the George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center and coeditor of Lincoln's Proclamation: Race, Place, and the Paradoxes of Emancipation (forthcoming).
