When dawn's opal color reached across the empty of my bedroom wall to find your face, I knew you were a bird. A bird sleeping on a crooked branch next to the bird that was me, awake. Not true, what they say about bird appetites. The history of birds is written on scrolls and wound inside the hollow of their bones. There is no first day, only the noise of memory mistaken for song.
I wrote this for you on expensive yellow paper. It was probably the reason you didn't call.
