Bagnall, Norma . Sea Sources: Bibliographic and Resource Material of Children's Literature of the Sea. College Station, TX: Texas A&M University Sea Grant College Program, (revised ed.) 1981.

This revision of the 1979 Sea Sources adds annotations and arranges its material in categories: information books, biographies/explorers, fiction/adventure, picture books (most already listed in the preceding section), whales and sea mammals (again, repeated from other sections), folk/fairy tales, poetry and song, activity/experiments, short stories/read-aloud chapters, and a very brief (3 items) bibliography of other bibliographies in the same area. There are over 700 entries, including books with river (Abel's Island, Mr. Gumpy's Outing) or lake (Chapter 6 of Stuart Little) settings; and several unexpected items (The Art of the Vikings, Bridges, Air-Raid—Pearl Harbor!, Peter Pan, Where the Wild Things Are) besides the many fine books with watery settings or characters in a major role. The commentary is critical, condemning some books for inaccuracy, stereotyping, or pat solutions: but most works have been included because they had merit. Symbols denoting at least the really outstanding or highly recommended books would be helpful to the user having to make selections among the riches here. [End Page 38]
