To the Editor:

I would like to point out some omissions and errors in the printing of my article, "Punches, Proofs, and Printings: The Seven States of Artaria's First Edition" in the December 2000 issue of Notes.

The photograph intended for figure 3b (p. 305) was also used for figure 3a. The correct photograph for figure 3a is shown on the next page.

For figure 3b, the handwritten notation at the top of the page was cut off in the illustration. The intact illustration is shown on p. 450.

The correct reading of this notation is "ganze Note," not "ganze Takte" as I misstated on page 312 and appendix 4, figure 3. The authenticity of this notation as Beethoven's handwriting is under debate. In his edition of Beethoven's piano sonatas, however, Johannes Fischer accepts the authenticity of the marking and edits the sonata accordingly (Beethoven, Sonaten für Klavier, ed. Johannes Fischer [Leipzig: Peters, c1988], 1:294).

On page 321, in the first full paragraph, the last sentence should have been replaced with the following text: "One significant textual change appears at m. 282 of op. 2, no. 3, last movement (51/1/3). The new plate places the p dynamic marking on the first e- although the older issues placed it on the following f-. Also, the new plate adds the bass clef that was missing from the lower staff in m. 306 (51/3/7). Other than these and a few other minor changes, the re-engraved plates adhere to the first issue."

In appendix 5 (p. 328-29), I erred in numbering the following measures:

2. Pitches
2/2/i/128* should read 2/2/i/129*
2/3/iv/269 should read 2/3/iv/296

3. Clefs and Key Signatures
2/2/i/283* should read 2/2/i/284*

Correction:

In Daniel Stolper's review of The Robert Bloom Collection (Notes, September 2001, p. 188), the date of the article by Gordon Emerson in the New Haven Register should be 16 [not 26] March 1980. We regret the error.
