  • ChLA Elects Officers & Board

The results of the ChLA election were announced at the annual membership meeting by Elections Chairperson, Jane Bingham. The officers, chosen for the first time under the new constitution, are Jon C. Stott, president; Margaret P. Esmonde, vice-president/president-elect; and Jane Bingham, secretary of the Board of Directors. Outgoing board members Ben Brockman, Francelia Butler, and Jon Stott were succeeded by author Jane Yolen, Rebecca Lukens (Miami Univ.), and Stephen D. Roxburgh (SUNY, Stony Brook), who will serve three-year terms. Also selected to fill the unexpired terms of Jane Bingham and Margaret Esmonde were Dorrel T. Hanks (Baylor) and Ruth MacDonald (Rutgers), runners-up in the election. They will serve for one year. The five new members join Board Members Marilyn Apseloff, Alethea Helbig, Francis Molson, and Taimi Ranta. Charity Chang was appointed by the journal to serve as its representative on the board in accordance with the constitution. These thirteen representatives, together with Executive Secretary Rachel Fordyce, bring the ChLA Board of Directors to [End Page 1] its full complement of fourteen members for the first time since the new constitution was adopted. In subsequent elections, a vice president (who shall be president-elect), a secretary, and three board members will be chosen each year by the membership at large.

ChLA offers its sincere thanks to its out-going board members. Francelia Butler, founder and editor-in-chief of Children's Literature, needs no introduction to members. Dr. Butler was named honorary lifetime member of ChLA in 1976, and the Association would like to commend her once again for all her encouragement and assistance, as well as her devoted service as a board member.

Bennett A. Brockman, Francelia's colleague and co-editor of the journal, has served as representative from Children's Literature to ChLA and has been instrumental in establishing the fine rapport which exists between ChLA and the journal. ChLA would like to express its gratitude for his unstinting efforts and deep commitment to the field of children's literature and to the Association. [End Page 3]
