Suzanne L. Bunkers is Professor of English at Mankato State University. Her articles have appeared in A /B: Auto /biography Studies, Legacy: Journal of Nineteenth Century Women Writers, Women's Studies International Forum, and Studies in Autobiography. Her edition of The Diary of Caroline Seabury, 1854-1863 (University of Wisconsin Press, 1991) is based on her interest in women's diaries as autobiography.

Chris Crutcher works as a child and family therapist, specializing in child abuse, in Spokane, Washington. He has published four young adult novels, Running Loose, Stotan!, The Crazy Horse Electric Game, and Chinese Handcuffs, all of which were named Best Books for Young Adults by the American Library Association. Recent publications include a book of young adult short stories, Athletic Shorts, and an adult novel, The Deep End. Crutcher is also preparing to publish Staying Fat for Sarah Burns.

Following her work as storyteller and librarian, Betsy Hearne was book review editor of the children's section of Booklist, published by the American Library Association, for 12 years. She is now a faculty member of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and editor of The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books. She has served as a judge for the National Book Awards and the American Book Awards, was a consultant for five years on the Newberry/Caldecott Awards and Notable Book Awards Committees of the ALA, and has lectured and written widely on children's literature. Her publications include: Choosing Books for Children: A Commonsense Guide, Beauty and the Beast: Visions and Revisions of an Old Tale, and several children's and young adult books, among them Eli's Ghost and Love Lines: Poetry in Person. A teacher for over 30 years, Herbert Kohl has taught all grades from kindergarten through graduate school. He has published approximately 35 books on education, language, mathematics, computers, and social activism. Among his books are: 36 Children, Reading, How to, The Open Classroom, A Book of Puzzlements, I Won't Learn From You, and Growing Minds. He is education editor of The Hungry Mind Review and presently is working on a project to improve high schools in New York City under a grant from the Aaron Diamond Foundation.

A professor in English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University, Lois Kuznets has taught children's literature for many years and has written numerous articles in the field as well as a monograph, Kenneth Grahame, published in the Twayne series. She has served in the Children's Literature Association in many capacities and has recently been a peer counselor in the Domestic Violence Project in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while on a sabbatical from San Diego State University.

Donnarae MacCann has been the head librarian at the UCLA Laboratory School and has taught children's literature at UCLA and other universities. In 1989 and 1990 she was visiting professor in African American World Studies at the University of Iowa. She is a columnist for The Wilson Library Bulletin, and her publications include: Social Responsibility in Librarianship: Essays on Equality (editor), The Black American in Books for Children (co-editor), Cultural Conformity in Books for Children (coeditor), and The Child's First Books: A Critical Study of Pictures and Texts (co-editor).

William Moebius has taught in the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for twenty-five years. His publications include Elegies and Odes, a translation of all the extant poetry of the Late Greek poet Philodemus for the Penguin edition of the Greek Anthology; a translation of Sophocles, Oedipus at Colunus; and articles on aspects of children's literature, particularly the picture book, in Children's Literature and elsewhere.
