Thanks to the gracious assistance of Watson Hines III, Elizabeth Catlett's agent, we were able to reproduce her 1947 linocut, titled "My right is a future of equality with other Americans," for the cover of this special issue. It was published most recently in Lift Every Voice and Sing (text by James Weldon Johnson, illustrations by Catlett, introduction by Jim Haskins) from Walker and Company in New York (1993).

For the frontispiece, Professor Lynda Koolish generously allowed us to print her photo of Toni Morrison taken at a Berkeley bookstore in 1987.
