- William T. Stafford 1924-1991
The staff of Modern Fiction Studies deeply regrets the death of Professor and Editor William T. Stafford on 7 February 1991. One of the founders in 1955 of Modern Fiction Studies, Bill Stafford served the journal as Circulation Manager from 1955-1956, Associate Editor from 1956-1958, Managing Editor from 1958-1968, Chairman of the Editorial Board from 1968-1972, Co-Editor with Margaret Church from 1972-1982, and Editor from 1982 until his early retirement for health reasons in 1990. He fought valiantly against cancer for over three years, a struggle that inspired both colleagues and students.
Bill Stafford's devotion to Modern Fiction Studies was unsurpassed. Indeed, the words he used to describe Maurice Beebe, the journal's first editor, could also describe him: "indefatigable industry and imaginative dedication." And yet, as Stafford acknowledged for Beebe, "such words are an inadequate account of all that he created and left with Modern Fiction Studies . . . ." We shall miss him.
