  • The Bibliographical SocietyThe Annual General Meeting

The one hundred and fifteenth Annual General Meeting was held at Middle Temple, Middle Temple Lane, London, on Tuesday 16 October 2007. The President, Dr Elisabeth Leedham-Green, was in the Chair. The minutes of the previous AGM (which had been printed in The Library for June 2007) were taken as read, seconded by Ms Robin Myers, and confirmed.

The President presented the Annual Report for 2006–2007 and proposed its adoption; this was seconded by Dr Julian Roberts and carried.

The Treasurer presented the Accounts for 2006, noting significant increases from two particular sources: a bequest from the estate of the late Katharine F. Pantzer of about £150,000, the income from which will be used to fund additional named research grants from 2008, and additional revenue from sales of The Library on-line through Oxford University Press. He also noted that the Society had made research grants of just over £13,000. He proposed adoption of the Accounts; this was seconded by Dr David Shaw and carried. The proposal to appoint the firm Thornton Springer as Auditor for 2007 was also passed, after being seconded by Professor John Flood.

The President explained that no new Council members were to be elected this year, owing to Council's decision in 2001 to extend the term of office of ordinary Council members from 3 to 4 years. No new Council members were elected in 2003 and therefore none stands down in 2007.

All existing officers were willing to serve in their respective positions for another one-year term; their election was proposed, seconded by Dr Jenny Stratford, and carried.

The President summarized some of the Society's activities over the past year. It had published an Index to the Courtbooks of the Stationers' Company, 1679–1717, and will publish in the first half of 2008 Richard Gameson's book on Canterbury Cathedral manuscripts and (in association with the British Library) Nigel Tattersfield's Bewick bibliography. The Society has mounted two electronic publications on its website: addenda and corrigenda to Julian Roberts and Andrew Watson's John Dee's Library Catalogue, and Michael Turner's London Book Trades database; and is making progress towards mounting a third: John Morris and Philip Oldfield's British Armorial Bookbindings. The Society's library was moved to Senate House, University of London, and members may access not only it but the entire Senate House library collection on production of the [End Page 249] current programme card signed by the member. The Society's archive has been removed from the Stationers' Company, and its next home is still being considered. The Society's Gold Medal was to be awarded to Dr Dennis Rhodes at the meeting on 18 December 2007 and the President encouraged members to attend. She announced that the November 2007 speaker has had to cancel and advised members to consult the website for information about a substitute lecture. She thanked the Secretary for her assistance, and concluded the meeting.

The President then handed over to Vanessa Hayward, Keeper of Middle Temple Library, and Renae Satterley, who spoke about the book collection and led a tour of the hall and library. [End Page 250]
