Home movie-making developed into a new ritual grounded within the family, using available consumer technology to construct one's own domestic ideals. This essay examines how amateurs considered religious ideals as well. A collection of home movies from the 1920s and 1930s illustrates how one Dutch Catholic father of fourteen children used his small-gauge film camera to express his lived experience in terms of official Catholic discourse.
