142 HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY sense cannot be achieved with quanta of light or electrons" (p. 250). We are caught in an "intraphenomenal prison" and, as Cassirer has pointed out in good Kantian orientation, "the expectation that we might objectively describe reality is akin to the hope that man could jump over his own shadow" (p. 252). Dr. Itzkoff's book effectively supports this thesis and, in my opinion, rightly so. But be that as it may, the book does place contemporary issues in a new--and perhaps a not too new, because Kantian---perspective. Cassirer's neo-Kantianism may yet provide a fresh approach to the problems of contemporary philosophy of science, and Professor Itzkoff's work may well be a first step toward that end. The numerous bibliographical references provide a broad basis for an intensive study of the problems at issue. W. H. WERKMEISTER Florida State University BOOKS RECEIVED First Editions Abrams, M. H.
