280 HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY stiindnis (understanding-of-Being) in Being and Time. This concept is given but cursory mention in Magnus' study, and, thus, though Magnus' philosophical instincts concerning Heidegger's self-interpretation may be correct, his account is unconvincing. Magnus turns in the second chapter of his second part to Heidegger's interpretation of the eternal recurrence doctrine. Whereas Heidegger construes the eternal recurrence and the will-to-power as a unitary phenomenon, the Nietzschean Being of beings, Magnus argues that Heidegger's interpretation is not textually sustained and that the terms "will" and "revenge" are used more psychologically by Nietzsche than metaphysically. Here Magnus relies heavily on Heidegger's "Who is Nietzsche's Zarathustra?" which appears in Vortriige und Au]siitze. His interpretation of Heidegger's Nietzsche interpretation is very fair and very thorough. The manner in which Heidegger construes Nietzsche's doctrines in relation to the phenomenon of time is treated by Magnus with considerable insight and sensitivity. In his final chapter Magnus both criticizes Heidegger's analysis of Nietzsche's doctrines and commends Heidegger for his suggestiveness and for the philosophical insight into Heidegger's own views which the Nietzsche interpretation conveys. Heidegger is taken to task for ignoring Nietzsche's struggles with the cosmological proof of the eternal recurrence doctrine, missing the significance of the Nietzschean critique of Christianity, conflating Nietzsche's account of nihilism with his own and missing the existential dimension of the eternal recurrence doctrine. These criticisms of Heidegger's Nietzsche interpretation are well documented and well argued. Clearly not enough attention has been given to Heidegger's interpretation of the Western philosophical tradition. Magnus' book helps to remedy this deficiency, and for this reason it is a helpful contribution to Heidegger scholarship. STEPHEN A.
