The Merleau-Ponty Bibliography: Additions and Corrections KERRY WHITESIDE WITH RESPECT TO the original publication in French of Merleau-Ponty's works, this article serves as a complement to each of the following bibliographies : I. Paul Good and Federico Camino, "Bibliographie des Werkes yon Maurice Merleau-Ponty," PhilosophischesJahrbuch 77(197o), PP. 434-443. II. Franqois Lapointe and Clara Lapointe, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and his Critics: an International Bibliography (New York and London: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1976), pp. 3-5 and 9-29. III. A. M6traux, "Bibliographie de Maurice Merleau-Ponty," in MerleauPonty ou la mesure de l'homme, by Xavier Tilliette (Paris: Editions Seghers, 197o) pp. 173-183. The reader interested in translations and later editions of Merleau-Ponty's writings is advised to consult bibliography II. My primary goal has been to make accessible a number of writings by Merleau-Ponty which, recently published or rediscovered, appear in a bibliography of his works for the first time. A second goal has been to make the existing bibliographies more useful by reconciling discrepancies among them. Regarding the bibliographies listed above, omissions and conflicting entries were ascertained; I then checked these against the original publications and put the correct entry in the present bibliography. I have not duplicated entries where all bibliographies agreed. In addition, some notable errors encountered in secondary literature on Merleau-Ponty have been corrected . The nature of the revisions is indicated in parenthesis at the end of the entry: [I95] 196 HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY (AA) = entry to be Added to All bibliographies. (AI, AII and/or AIII) = entry to be Added to I, II and/or III. (CI, CII and/or CIII) = entry Corrected in I, II, and/or III. (CL) = error Corrected in Literature other than I, II or III. Along with this article, the reader need consult only one of the bibliographies listed above to have the most complete and accurate reference work available on Merleau-Ponty's original publications. I would like to express my gratitude to Mine. Susanne Merleau-Ponty, who brought the first entry to my attention, and to M. Jean PouillonIa member of the editorial board of Les Temps Modernes since its formation-who helped me verify the authorship of anonymous editorial commentary in the review. Thanks also go to Professor S. Mallin, whose meticulous examination of this bibliography has resulted in substantial improvements in it. I assume, however, full responsibility for any errors that may remain. 1. 1932 "Discours d'usage prononc6 par M. Merleau-Ponty." Bulletin de l'Association Amicale des Anciens EIbves du LycOeF~lix-Faure (Beauvais), 13 juillet 1932, pp. ")r (AA) 1936 [Merleau-Ponty is reported to have "collaborated with" Aron Gurwitsch in writing "Quelques aspects et quelques d6veloppements de la psychologie de la forme," which appeared in the Journal de Psychologie Normale et Pathologique, mai-iuin 1936. In a footnote of acknowledgment, Gurwitsch does in fact thank Merleau-Ponty for having "reread" the article prior to publication, but it was entirely of the fi)rmer's authorship .] (CII, CIII) 1944 [Several writers have suggested that the anonymous tract entitled "La R6sistance, la France et le monde de demain," dated "mai 1944" and found in the papers of Georges Oudard at the Institut de l'histoire du temps pr6sent in Paris, was written by Merleau-Ponty. Inquiries in Paris with the persons who had originally made this attribution revealed no direct evidence to this effect. Moreover, significant stylistic differences between this document and Merleau-Ponty's writings of this period argue against the hypothesis that he is its author.] (CL) [One bibliographer has listed a "Review of Hans Herter's 'Ahes und Neues zu Platons Kritias,' " from the Rheinisches Museum fftr Philologie, vol. 92, ('944) as being among Merleau-Ponty's works. The RMP contains only Herter's article, there is no review of it, and nothing by Merleau-Ponty is in the volume.] (CL) MERLEAU-PONTY BIBLIOGRAPHY 197 1946 2. "Pour la vEritE."
