BOOK REVIEWS 503 volume also includes articles by John W. Elrod on Kierkegaard, by Cornelius F. Delaney on Peirce, and by Albert W. Levi on Whitehead. The appreciation of Professor Collins as man, teacher, and scholar, written by J. Patrick Murray and Daniel O. Dahlstrom, is informative while being justly laudatory. It is not clear, however, that they have sufficiently explained the connection of Collins's early Thomistic orientation (quite obvious in his A History of Modern European Philosophy) with "his open-ended concept of 'perennial philosophy.' ,2 They might also have better explicated for the reader not familiar with Collins's thought the supposed "purist split" between history of philosophy and philosophy that he opposes. ~ This volume, which also contains a bibliography of Professor Collins's publications and a gracious reply by him, merits inclusion in the collection of any serious university library. EDWARD P. MAHONEY Duke University See Io--11. In his thoughtful study ("Collins and Gadamer on Interpretation"), James L. Marsh simply speaks of Collins's school of philosophy as "Thomistic theistic realism" (231). See 9-1o.
