BOOK REVIEWS I71 science, since they couple the understanding of both "self" (subject) and "the world" (object), and since the problems of normative epistemology require prior resolution of questions concerning the self that possesses scientific knowledge. Building on an idea of Charles Taylor, Straker develops the exciting thesis that "the history of our changing conceptions of nature is the disguised form of the real history being enacted, the history of changing conceptions of the 'self'" (258). The editors preface the collection with a nicely-judged portrait of "Westfall as Teacher and Scholar," include a real photographic portrait as frontispiece, and append a bibliography of his publications on the history of science, the discipline he wisely sees "as potentially the fundamental mode of understanding our situation in the modern world" (Straker, 246).
