BOOKS RECEIVED 47 x deny that Nietzsche believed that (external) "politics or statecraft.., ought to be left to the statesmen..." (46). Even those, like myself, who agree with Thiele that Nietz$che was much more concerned with individual spirituality than with political reality may think that he gives Nietzsche's overt remarks on specific political issues too litde attention . Thiele might also be criticized for providing a reading of Nietzsche that is too internally consistent and too much tied to a conventional philosophical map. For instance , Thiele claims that Nietzsche's individualism is motivated by his firm epistemological skepticism (a skepticism that is so staunch that it dissolves most other apparent inconsistencies). Even when traversing well-worked territory, however, Thiele tells the story in an interesting way. Because he avoids analysis of current scholarly debate within the text (relegating such discussions to footnotes), his book should be particularly valuable as an introduction to Nietzsche's thought. However, the coherence and integrative power of Thiele's vision, as well as his provocative disagreements with other readings, should make this book thoroughly interesting to Nietzsche scholars as well.
