BOOKS RECEIVED 315 sophistication varies, but in general one could say that this is not suitable as an introductory text. Junior, senior, and graduate level philosophy courses are the most appropriate for the level of the text. In terms of weaknesses, one could note that the omission of William James stands out. It is hard to criticize a book containing so much material for omissions, but it would seem that James's work from the first decade of this century might be used to frame the discussions of method and religion at the least. Ryder offers no explanation as to why James is omitted. Perhaps James's theism and his mystical tendencies are to blame, for the book has a decidedly antitheistic tone. Yet for many, James is the consummate American naturalist, and given that the bulk of his philosophical work was published in this century, it seems that he should have a place in the anthologT. Another surprising omission is Charles Hartshorne, who is also a representative of theistic naturalism. One might also have expected to see the famous "halfhearted naturalism" exchange between Dewey and Santayana here, but it does not appear. Finally, in terms of weaknesses, the book has no index (which is so easily done in this day and age). Also, it is not currently available in paperback. Its price is not exorbitant, but it would surely be an easier choice as a classroom text if it were more affordable. RANDALL E. AUXlER Oklahoma City University BOOKS RECEIVED Altham,J.
