Dirk Baecker, a sociologist at the University of Bielefeld, is the author of Information und Risiko in der Marktwirtschaft (1988), Womit handeln Banken? (1993) and Die Form des Unternehmens (1993). He collaborated with Niklas L uhmann and the artist Fredrick D. Bunsen on the volume Unbeobachtbare Welt: Über Kunst und Architektur. An English volume of essays that develop the concept of form introduced in G. Spencer Brown’s Laws of Form is forthcoming.

Lutz Ellrich is Wissenschaftlicher Assistent at the University of Freiburg. He has published numerous articles on rhetoric, legal theory, the sociology of computers, and aesthetics. Forthcoming is a book on systems theory and its alternatives entit led Niklas Luhmann im Unterschied and a second book on problems of ethnography with the title Verschriebene Fremde.

Elena Esposito of the Department of Sociology of the University of Urbino is the author of L’operazione di osservazione: Costruttivisimo e teoria dei sistemi sociali (1992). She has published widely on observation theory, theoretical issues in sociology, and the significance of technological media.

Ranulph Glanville, whose work bridges architecture and cybernetics, teaches at the Centre for New Media Research at the University of Portsmouth, England, U.K. A collection of his essays on cybernetic matters is available in German under the title Objekte (1988).

Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht is the Albert Guerard Professor of Literature at Stanford University. His study, In 1926, An Essay on Historical Simultaneity is forthcoming (1997) from Harvard University Press. Currently, he divides his time between t wo book projects: The Non-Hermeneutic and The Beauty of American Football. He is also working to establish a Media Research Lab as a site for an interdisciplinary collaboration between the humanities and the natural sciences.

Niklas Luhmann is one of the most influential social theorists of this century. Among his recent books are: Die Wissenschaft der Gesellschaft (1990), Soziolo-
gische Aufklärung 5: Konstruktivistische Perspektiven
(1990); Soziologie des Risikos (1992). His most recent book-length study is a sociology of art, Die Kunst der Gesellschaft (1995). Luhmann’s outline of his systems-theoretical fr amework has just appeared in English translation: Social Systems (Stanford, 1995).

Harro Müller is Professor of German at Columbia University. His most recent books are Geschichte zwischen Kairos und Katastrophe/Historische Romane im 20. Jahrhundert (1988) and Giftpfeile: Zu Theorie und Literatur der Moderne (1 994).

Dietrich Schwanitz is a Professor of English at the University of Hamburg. Among his recent publications are Systemtheorie und Literatur, Englische Kulturgeschichte (2 vols.), as well as the campus novel Der Campus.

Bianca Theisen is Assistant Professor of German at the Johns Hopkins University. She has published Bogenschluß: Kleists Formalisierung des Lesens and essays on Nietzsche, Romanticism, and Thomas Bernhard. She is currently working on a book on the autopoeisis of genre.
