This essay places recent shifts in Catholic voting patterns and controversies over Catholic politicians and moral issues in historical perspective. Current attacks by some Catholic bishops on pro-choice Catholic Democrats (and now Republicans) rest upon a growing sectarianism within Catholicism and resistance to any moderation of the pro-choice position within the Democratic party.
