Christina B. Kennedy

The APCG is pleased to honor Christina B. Kennedy, from the Department of Geography at Northern Arizona University, with this year's Distinguished Service Award. Christina has supported the Association over many years, serving on the Resolutions and Nominations committees and on the Editorial Board of the APCG Yearbook. She was vice-president in 1998–99 and president the next year. Tina was the co-organizer of the 1998 annual meeting in Flagstaff, where she instituted the tradition of raising substantial funds for the organization through the annual meeting. Tina has given eight papers at APCG meetings, exploring place imagery and meaning, particularly of the American Southwest, in various media, including newspapers, magazines, films, and novels. She discussed urban imagery in comics and film in her Yearbook article on "Dick Tracy's Cityscape" (coauthored with Chris Lukinbeal), while turning to beloved wild places in her 2000 presidential address, "'I Too of the Wild Hills': Experience, Meaning, and Place." Tina has always been a strong advocate for our organization, using her column in Pacifica to stress that collegiality and mentoring are hallmarks of the APCG, traits she demonstrates well through her continuing service.

For her many contributions made in those spirits, the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers takes great pleasure in giving Christina B. Kennedy the Distinguished Service Award for 2006.
