This year's social science book award goes to Memories of a Future Home: Diasporic Citizenship of Chinese in Panama by Lok Siu (Stanford University Press 2005). This monograph provides a powerful ethnography of the Chinese community in Panama and their dynamic experiences of identity, ethnicity, and national belonging. Analyzing practices of diaspora and citizenship, Lok Siu sheds light on the transnational politics of Chinese denizens navigating state boundaries and national communities. This work makes an important contribution to the burgeoning literature on globalization, migration, and Asian American politics.
