2006 Margaret Church MFS Memorial Prize

The Editors are pleased to announce the winner of the 2006 Margaret Church Memorial Prize for the best essay to appear in MFS. The Church Prize was established in 1984 in memory of Dr. Church, professor of English and comparative literature at Purdue University and a longtime editor of this journal.

The winner for 2006 is Hsuan L. Hsu, author of "Mimicry, Spatial Captation, and Feng Shui in Han Ong's Fixer Chao", which appeared in volume 52, issue 3 (pages 675-704).

Special thanks to Thomas Schaub (University of Wisconsin) for choosing this year's winner. In making his selection, Prof. Schaub writes,

Hsuan L. Hsu's beautifully written essay on Han Ong's Fixer Chao deftly explores alternative models of the self's relation to urban spaces, unpacking the twists and turns of the major character's masquerade as a Feng Shui master. Hsu's essay not only offers a brilliant reading of Ong's novel that intervenes in Asian American studies but also identifies a tradition from Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man to Chang Rae Lee's Native Speaker in which strategies of mimicry, spatial captation, and ecocriticsm are weighed and valued with stunning clarity and judgment.

Prof. Hsu, who teaches at Yale University, received $300 and a certificate, a copy of which appears here. [End Page 404]
