Ivy G. Wilson is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame. His most recent work includes Specters of Democracy and an article in PMLA.

Cathryn Halverson is Associate Professor at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies and is author of Maverick Autobiographies. She is completing a book on western women's literary autobiography, 1840–1950.

Elizabeth Willis teaches literature and creative writing at Wesleyan University. She is author of four books of poetry, most recently Meteroric Flowers. Books on poetry and visual culture and Lorine Niedecker are in progress.

Michael Kreyling is Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English at Vanderbilt. This essay is part of a project on "southern literature and the matrices of memory."
