The article considers a two line epigram from the Greek Anthology:
Niobe
From a person, the gods turned me to stone.
From a stone, Praxiteles gave me life again.
The epigram is discussed in terms of traumatic metamorphosis/petrifaction of the body and the redemptive efficacy of art. Although sculpture is the ostensibly-lauded power, in fact the primary resurrection is accomplished through lyric poetry. This essay considers the formal and psychological dynamics of such "healing" through lyric.
