About the Contributors

Larry J. Griffin is coeditor of Southern Cultures and the John Shelton Reed Distinguished Professor of Sociology and professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is now studying southern whites' memories of the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras in the South and exploring whether they suggest personal or collective responsibility, shame, and guilt.

Barbara Hahn is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the author of "Into the Belly of the Beast: The 2002 North Carolina Flue-Cured Tobacco Tour," which appeared in the Fall 2003 issue of Southern Cultures. Her dissertation examines the technologies of tobacco production.

Louis Kyriakoudes is the author of The Social Origins of the Urban South: Race, Gender and Migration in Nashville and Middle Tennessee, 1890–1930, published in 2003 by the University of North Carolina Press. He has served as an expert witness on the history of cigarettes against the tobacco industry, and is associate professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he teaches social and economic history.

Michael McFee teaches in the English department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This year his seventh book of poems, Shinemaster, will be published by Carnegie Mellon, and his collection of essays The Napkin Manuscripts: Selected Essays and an Interview will be published by the University of Tennessee Press.

Paul D. H. Quigley is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is writing a dissertation on the intellectual and cultural sources of Confederate nationalism. He is also associate editor of Southern Cultures.

Blain Roberts received her B.A. in history from Princeton University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is assistant professor of history at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, and is currently completing a book on southern women and beauty.
