This article engages with the challenges which in different ways Emmanuel Levinas and Masao Abe make to Christian theism. In the light of this dialogue Christian discipleship emerges as intrinsically relational in form, formed by a demanding encounter of two freedoms. It is argued that it is this very process of wrestling with 'the other' which builds a properly Christian 'spirituality of dialogue'.
