Myriad factors influence students' class participation. This paper develops a path model to delineate students' perceptions of how the classroom's formal and informal structures, along with student attributes, affect self-reported class participation. In our survey, students (n = 1550) report that while organization constrains their participation, students view their interaction with faculty outside the classroom as most important in affecting self-reported participation within it.
