Introduction: Symposium on Pragmatist Aesthetics, Second Edition

Julie Vancamp
California State University, Long Beach

Pragmatist Aesthetics: Living Beauty, Rethinking Art, 2d ed., by Richard Shusterman. Lanham, Md.: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc., 2000.

The print symposium here on Richard Shusterman's important contribution to contemporary aesthetics and pragmatism originated at an "Author-Meets-Critics" session at the 2001 Pacific Meetings of the American Philosophical Association.

The first edition of Pragmatist Aesthetics (published in 1992 by Blackwell) has been translated into numerous languages and has benefited from extensive critical discussion. The second edition reflects a decade of continued invigoration of pragmatism in philosophical and interdisciplinary pursuits, both here and abroad. It also adds a chapter on "somaesthetics," providing both fresh insights and historical grounding for a focus on the body's role in aesthetic experience, a perspective that is now dominant in performing-arts theory.

Three philosophers from diverse intellectual traditions discuss here the new edition (cited in the text as PA). Shusterman responds to their commentaries and expands on ideas raised in the forum at the meetings.
