Abstract

The clarinet's use in England during the 1760s has not been thoroughly documented. Among several interesting discoveries, Rice has found its use in military bands; at Ranelagh Gardens; and the construction of five- and six-key clarinets by George Miller and Thomas Collier. The musical use of the clarinet was surprisingly extensive: in opera and a masque by Arne, J.C. Bach, Philip Hayes, Vento, Barthélemon and Dibdin; in symphonies by William Herschel, Barthélemon and Erskine; and in song collections by James Hook.
