Notes on Contributors

Robert A. Skipper works primarily in philosophy of biology and philosophy of science. Within philosophy of science, he uses evolutionary biology to drive his research on scientific explanation, confirmation, and theory change. In philosophy of biology, Skipper works on theory assessment in population genetics and conceptual problems at the foundations of evolutionary genetics more generally. He received the Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Maryland, College Park and is presently Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati.
Edward Grant is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and Philosophy of Science and Professor Emeritus of History at Indiana University, Bloomington. He has published approximately ninety articles and ten books on medieval science and natural philosophy (an eleventh is currently in press). He has served as President of the History of Science Society, which also awarded him its prestigious George Sarton Medal (1992). He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America.
Ann La Berge is Associate Professor of STS at Virginia Tech, where she teaches history of science and medicine. Her most recent book is Constructing Paris Medicine (1998), co-edited with Caroline Hannaway. This article is part of a larger project now nearing completion on medical microscopy in nineteenth-century France. [End Page 1]
Volker R. Remmert has been trained as mathematician and historian. He works on the history of the mathematical sciences in the Nazi period and on the history of science, art and culture in early modern Europe. His book on the role of frontispieces in the Scientific Revolution, Widmung, Welterklärung und Wissenschaftslegitimierung: Titelbilder und ihre Funktionen in der Wissenschaftlichen Revolution, is about to be published by the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel.
