Austin Allen is an assistant professor of history at the University of Houston-Downtown. He is currently working on a book about the Dred Scott case to be published by the University of Georgia Press.
Marc Egnal is professor of history at York University, Toronto. He is completing a book-length manuscript on the causes of the sectional conflict. This project, “A Clash of Extremes: Rethinking the Origins of the American Civil War,” is to be published by Hill & Wang.
Jonathan W. White is a doctoral student at the University of Maryland, College Park. The article arose as a seminar paper that was revised into a chapter of his master’s thesis, “With Ballot and Bullet: The Union Army and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln,” defended in 2003.
