Guide to the Manuscripts Concerning Baja California in the Collections of the Bancroft Library. By Rose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz. Berkeley: University of California Press, 2002. Pp. 587. Maps. $75.00 cloth.

The Bancroft Library has recently published several works of interest to scholars of Latin American history. In 1998 the Library published the tables of gold and silver remittances from the New World to Spain complied by Engel Sluiter. These data cover the period from 1572 until 1648 and are based on an entire lifetime of study by Professor Sluiter. The second work, published in 2002 is a guide to the Baja California materials held in the Bancroft. This finding aid, compiled by Rose Marie Beebe and Robert Senkewicz, is an invaluable aid to scholars interested in Baja California from the seventeenth century until the late nineteenth century. The Bancroft holdings are particularly rich, in light of the collection policies of Bancroft himself. This guide will be of tremendous utility.
