Fellowships: The School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, academic year 2005-2006. The School of Historical Studies is concerned principally with the history of western, near eastern, and far eastern civilizations, with emphasis upon Greek and Roman civilizations, the history of Europe (medieval, early modern, and modern), the Islamic world, East Asian studies, the history of art, and modern international relations. The School also offers the Edward T. Cone Membership in Music Studies. Residence in Princeton during term time is required. Members pursue their own research and may participate in seminars and meetings both within the Institute and at nearby universities. Ph.D. (or equivalent) and substantial publications are required of all candidates at the time of application. Application may be made for one or two terms (September to December, January to April). Mellon fellowships for assistant professors: The School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, offered each year to two qualified assistant professors. Applicants must have served at least two, and not more than four years as assistant professors in institutions of higher learning in the U.S. or Canada and must have approval to return to their institution following the full-year fellowship. Stipends will match the combined salary and benefits at the member's home institution at the time of application. American Council of Learned Societies / Frederick Burkhardt fellowships, academic year 2005-2006: for up to eleven recently tenured faculty, most of whom will spend a year at one of several residential research centers, including the Institute for Advanced Study. Applicants must have begun their tenured contract at a U.S. institution no earlier than fall 2000. Applicants must submit a research plan, typically covering a three- to five-year period. Villa I Tatti: The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies offers up to fifteen fellowships for independent study on any aspect of the Italian Renaissance. The fellowships, which can be stipendiary or non-stipendiary, are for scholars of any nationality, normally post-doctoral and in the earlier stages of their careers. Stipends will be awarded according to individual needs of appointees and the availability of funds. The maximum grant will be no higher than $40,000; most will be considerably less. Fellows are required to devote full time to their projects and may not have other obligations such as teaching during their fellowship year.
