Shiva Eftekhari is currently in her third year at Columbia Law School. She received an A.B. degree in International Relations (Honors) and French Civilization from Brown University in 1999. This article was adapted from her senior honors thesis in international relations.

Anne Gallagher is Adviser on Trafficking to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Manager of OHCHR’s Anti-trafficking Programme. She has worked with the United Nations since 1992 and, during this time, has been involved in a range of mandates including economic, social and cultural rights; the human rights of women; human rights training for police and peace-keepers; and national human rights institutions. Ms. Gallagher lectures on human rights and humanitarian law at universities and institutions throughout Europe including the NATO Defense College and Abo Akademi Institute for Human Rights.

Mark Gibney is the Belk Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at the University of North Carolina-Asheville.

Maria Green, M.A., J.D. is the director of the International Anti-Poverty Law Center, an international human rights organization based in New York. Her research interests focus on international economic, social, and cultural rights.

Brigitte I. Hamm teaches International Relations at Gerhard-Mercator University, Duisburg, Germany; senior research fellow at the Institute for Development and Peace at Duisburg University; PhD in Political Science, research in the field of human rights, with a focus on economic and social rights.

Menno Kamminga is Professor of International Law at Maastricht University and Co-Director of the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights.

Erik Roxstrom is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Bergen School of Law.

Claude E. Welch, Jr. is SUNY Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science and Director of the Human Rights Center, State University of New York. He is the author of Protecting Human Rights in Africa: Roles and Strategies of Non-Governmental Organizations and numerous other books and articles. He specializes in human rights, African politics, and civil-military relations.
