Political scientist Ann Marie Clark has written an illuminating study of the role that Amnesty International has played in the elaboration of human rights norms relating to torture, disappearances and extrajudicial executions. Increasing scholarly attention is being paid to the role that human rights NGOs play in both the protection and promotion of human rights, and Professor Clark's study is cogent and illuminating. She sets her discussion within the political science literature which to-date has largely not taken account of the significance of NGOs. We highly recommend this study.
