My recent review of Sheldon Novick’s The Young Master concluded by taking issue with a passage in Millicent Bell’s discussion of this biography in TLS. Taking another look at Bell’s review, I find to my chagrin that I carelessly detached the passage from its context and misrepresented the bearing of her remarks. It is simply not the case that she insists on reading James as “a writer, tout court” or disregards the private experience that variously informed his fiction. There is little merit in these claims, and I trust that nobody acquainted with Bell’s superb and savvy criticism, in her TLS review or elsewhere, will be misled by them.
