MARY ROSE MUCCIE NAMED DIRECTOR, PROJECT MUSE®

The Johns Hopkins University Press is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary Rose Muccie as the new Director, Project MUSE®. Mary Rose will take the helm of the Press' pioneering online scholarly journal publishing venture beginning December 4, 2006.

"Project MUSE is proud to provide a fair and sustainable model for electronic journal publishing that meets the needs of both libraries and not-for-profit scholarly publishers," said Kathleen Keane, director of The Johns Hopkins University Press. "We are delighted to have an experienced leader like Mary Rose in place to steer MUSE's future developments and cultivate its full potential as a powerful tool for scholarly research and communication."

Most recently, Mary Rose held the position of Publisher with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), where she was responsible for all aspects of the society's book, journal, and electronic publishing activities. Among her accomplishments during her thirteen-year tenure with SIAM, Mary Rose counts the development of Locus, the society's complete journal archive digitization project, the successful negotiation of licenses for SIAM's online journal offerings with several major library consortia, and the launch of notable new journal titles including the SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, an electronic-only title with an accompanying open-access web portal. Mary Rose also chaired SIAM's Library Advisory Committee and oversaw the society's reference and textbook publishing efforts, including e-book activities.

Prior to joining SIAM, Mary Rose held editorial and production positions with the J.B. Lippincott Company and the Philadelphia Bar Association. She is an active member of the North American Serials Interest Group, Special Libraries Association, and Society for Scholarly Publishing. Mary Rose earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pennsylvania.

"I'm thrilled to be joining Project MUSE," said Mary Rose, "I look forward to engaging in an ongoing dialogue with MUSE participating publishers and the scholarly community, and to working with the MUSE staff to continue to provide an equitable and reliable model for online journal publishing in the humanities and social sciences."

MUSE RELEASES LINKS TO JSTOR ARTICLES

As part of a reciprocal linking agreement with JSTOR, an electronic journals archive, Project MUSE has released links to articles from the back issues of 25 MUSE journal titles. Users can now select an option on the MUSE Advanced Search page to include JSTOR articles in their MUSE searches, and can search on the citation information (title, author, abstract) of these articles. Users can gain access to the full text of these articles if their library participates in JSTOR.

JSTOR also provides access to the more recent Project MUSE issues of these 25 titles from the JSTOR interface. This reciprocal linking project gives users the convenience of being able to search and browse the full run of the journals, from Volume 1 to the current issue, from either MUSE or JSTOR.

MUSE and JSTOR have currently over 40 titles in common, and this number is expected to grow to over 50 in the near future. Publishers of the 25 journals in the linking project have agreed to fill any "gaps" in coverage between JSTOR and MUSE. For a list of journal titles included in the project so far, see Links to Back Issues in JSTOR.
