Project MUSE Features & Functionality

Flexible search options

The MUSE search interface is designed for all users, from undergraduate students to faculty researchers.

  • The search engine defaults to searching only those journals to which your institution subscribes; however, users can also opt to search the entire database.
  • Manage your search results in several ways: e-mail results with links to the full-text articles, export citations directly to EndNote or RefWorks, and download or print results in text-only format.
  • Limit searches by date, individual titles or groups of titles, or to just articles or reviews. Expand searches to include backfiles of selected journals in JSTOR.
  • Library of Congress Subject Headings display in search results.
  • Two search screens meet user preferences: basic screen with one search box or advanced with multiple boxes and limit options.
  • Search with simple keywords or phrases, or with complex Boolean search statements.
  • Search the full-text of articles as well as by specific fields, including author, title, Library of Congress Subject Headings, or a combination of fields.
  • Review, re-run or modify searches with Search History.
  • Search MUSE from anywhere on the web with the browser search plugin.

Browsing of full journal content

  • Browse journals by title or subject.
  • Get editorial information, submission guidelines, and general information from the journal homepages.
  • View complete tables of contents issue by issue. Article entries include Library of Congress Subject Headings and links to the full-text.

Alerting of new titles and issues

  • Librarians and users can sign up for RSS feeds or "Journal Alerts" to be notified when new issues come out in their favorite journals.
  • Receive RSS feeds or alerts also when new titles are added to the MUSE collections.

Link to MUSE from other electronic resources

  • Set up links to MUSE articles from indexing/abstracting or gateway services, including EBSCOhost, Ovid, ABC-CLIO, CSA, and many others. MUSE continues to expand its list of linking partners.
  • MUSE's reciprocal linking agreement with JSTOR allows users to search the full digital run of several core journals from the convenience of one interface.
  • MUSE is a member of CrossRef, a collaboration of publishers working together to facilitate linking.
  • MUSE content is indexed in Google and Google Scholar, enabling users to utilize these familiar interfaces to search the full text of journal articles in the collection.

Easy to set up and customize access

  • Subscription access enabled within 48 business hours.
  • MUSE supports referring URL and access by IP authentication, including proxy servers.
  • Customize the way your institution's name displays on the MUSE site - users will always know they're using a trusted resource.
  • 24/7 access is backed by a mirror site based in Australia.

COUNTER-compliant usage statistics

  • MUSE provides usage statistics based on COUNTER, the most current and widely-accepted standard available.
  • Statistics data are provided in Excel spreadsheets, automatically updated and ready to download each month.
  • Visit the MUSE Statistics Web page.

Librarians' resources Web page

Our "For Librarians" page lists tools, news, and pertinent information to help you get the most out of your MUSE subscription.

  • Support for cataloging and management of your MUSE journals subscription include a tool to download titles lists with URL and coverage information, and OCLC numbers provided with new title announcements.
  • An order form for MUSE promotional materials and a customizable press release template are some of the resources available to help you increase awareness of MUSE on campus.
  • Visit the "For Librarians" Web page.

User education resources

MUSE User Services librarians develop instructional guides and promotional materials to help you with your teaching and outreach needs.

  • Distribute our instructional guides in library classes or at the reference desk, or adapt them to your own guides and handouts as you please.
  • Postcards to put in faculty mailboxes are available to help you with your outreach efforts.
  • Receive a welcome kit with samples and more information about these guides and materials when you order a subscription to MUSE.
